Ursula von der Leyen, and EU leaders: Fund a "moonshot investment" into new sustainable protein technologies that will create 1000s of high technology jobs, drive new economic growth, and help stop runaway climate change.

It seems like a no-brainer, right? It should be the most obvious investment the EU could make to benefit people AND planet.

This world doesn’t exist in the imaginations of fantasists or dreamers – it is a real possibility. But not without the EU making a far-sighted investment to make Europe world leaders.

Modern industrialised animal agriculture is bad for animals, bad for humans, and bad for our planet. But the good news is that there is a better way.

Alternative proteins can provide the solution to all these problems. Whether plant-based, cultured meats or one of the most exciting new technologies – precision fermentation.

Precision fermentation is basically brewing our way to produce milk, cheese and meat. It takes friendly tiny microbes and turns them into food making machines. With this technology these friendly microbes churn out the same milk protein, meat proteins, or cheese protein that we currently get from animals. They taste the same, they have the same texture, they have the same smell and flavours – that's because they are the same proteins. It’s genius!

There’s one big problem – the farming industry are powerful players in Brussels so if we are to be heard we need as many people as possible to sign this petition to Ursula von der Leyen.

If we don’t invest now, others are already in the wings stealing a march – China, Singapore, Israel and the USA are all investing huge sums in what will become the technology of the future. If we don’t act, others will. We can’t let that happen.

We know the EU responds to public pressure. We’ve seen how people-power has forced the EU to rethink on gigantic global trade deals, or to respond to people’s concerns over pesticides. That shows that ordinary citizens have power. If the EU to invests now, it will create jobs, lead the world in this new technology, and help stop climate change.
